eNDING sLAVERY
On January 1st, 1863 the Emancipation Proclamation, which freed the slaves in the rebelling areas, took effect. On March 3rd,1863 Lincoln approved the first draft law in U.S. history. After he had signed it, Northern Democrats went against freeing slaves and tried to call themselves Peace Democrats. The Peace Democrats wanted the boys from the war to come home and demanded an immediate truce and a constitutional amendment that would guarantee slavery in the South. They didn't want Lincoln's policies of the draft, the military arrests, the use of Negro troops, and the Emancipation Proclamation. Lincoln replied to this as rebellion and said that if anyone obstructed the draft or rebelled, to have them put in prison.
